Toronto park in autumn

The Greater Toronto Area offers incredible outdoor experiences year-round, but timing your visit can make a big difference in terms of weather, crowd levels, and wildlife activity. Here's our month-by-month breakdown to help you plan the perfect trip.

Winter (December – February)

Temperature: -10°C to -1°C (14°F to 30°F)

Crowds: Very low — this is the quietest season for outdoor attractions.

Winter might seem like an unusual time to visit, but it has its advantages. Many outdoor exhibits feature cold-weather species like polar bears, arctic wolves, and snowy owls at their most active. Indoor pavilions like the Indo-Malaya Pavilion are warm and comfortable year-round.

What to bring: Warm layers, waterproof boots, gloves, and a thermos. Many venues sell hot drinks and food near outdoor exhibits.

Spring (March – May)

Temperature: 1°C to 18°C (34°F to 64°F)

Crowds: Moderate — increasing as the weather warms up.

Spring is arguably the best time for nature lovers. Migratory birds return to the GTA, wildflowers bloom in parks like High Park and the Rouge Valley, and many animals have babies — making for excellent viewing opportunities. April and early May are ideal for birdwatching at Tommy Thompson Park.

Tip: Weekdays in April are the sweet spot — warm enough to enjoy outdoor exhibits, but before the summer tourist rush.

Summer (June – August)

Temperature: 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F)

Crowds: Peak season — expect the largest crowds, especially on weekends and holidays.

Summer is the most popular time to visit, with the longest operating hours and the most special events, camps, and programs. However, it's also the busiest and hottest. Many animals seek shade during the midday heat, so plan to visit outdoor exhibits early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Strategy: Arrive when gates open, see outdoor exhibits first, then head indoors during the hottest part of the day. Return to outdoor areas after 3 PM when animals become active again.

Fall (September – November)

Temperature: 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F)

Crowds: Low to moderate — one of the best times to visit.

Fall is our personal favourite season for outdoor exploration. The fall foliage in parks like High Park, Rouge National Urban Park, and the Scarborough Bluffs is spectacular. Animals are preparing for winter, making them more active. Cooler temperatures make walking long distances much more comfortable.

Peak foliage: Late September through mid-October is when the colours are at their most vibrant. Combine a park visit with a trip to one of the GTA's many apple orchards or pumpkin patches for a full autumn day.

Quick Reference Table

Season Temp Range Crowds Best For
Winter -10°C to -1°C Very Low Arctic species, indoor pavilions
Spring 1°C to 18°C Moderate Baby animals, birdwatching
Summer 20°C to 30°C High Events, longest hours, families
Fall 5°C to 20°C Low Foliage, active animals, comfort

Our Recommendation

If you have flexibility, we recommend visiting in late September or early October. The weather is comfortable, crowds are thin, fall colours are stunning, and animals are active. It's the perfect combination for both nature walks and exhibit visits.
